Bitter melon as a cultural symbol

Almost every food found in nature has had a significant impact throughout history, and some, such as salt, have even caused the weakening of some civilizations as a cause of war or influenced the management of the economy by being taxed. For example, the Salt Tax imposed in China in 2200 BC is considered one of the first taxes in history. In some periods of the Roman Empire, soldiers' salaries could also be paid with salt. Salt, which was hard to find, was therefore considered a valuable product. This effect even led to the transformation of the Latin word for salt, “sal”, into salary in English.

Although not as striking as salt and various other spices, bitter melon also has an important place in different cultures. Some examples of this influence, especially in South East Asian countries, are as follows:

China Symbol of fertility

Bitter melon has an important place in traditional Chinese medicine, which continues to exist today. Bitter melon, which is directly associated with health and healing, is especially preferred for reducing fever, cleaning toxins and regulating blood sugar. Also used as a symbol of fertility during New Year celebrations, the bitter melon is believed to ward off evil spirits.

India: An element of healing

In both Thailand and Vietnam, it is used as an adjuvant in the treatment of various diseases and is also used to heal wounds.
